Spanish Cuisine

It’s only fair to dedicate an entire page to Spanish cuisine, because it deserves it. Dining in Spain was my favorite part of the trip. The incredible flavors paired with the incredible wine of the region was something that I loved. As I travel more and more, travel becomes about sharing beautiful moments with other people and enjoying a meal together. Dinner in Spain isn’t about replenishing calories, dinner in Spain was an experience.

Dinner at every restaurant in Spain was memorable but this one in particular was my favorite. It was my favorite because of the attention to detail by the staff & and if you’ve been to Europe you know this is rare. The food was also incredible. Me and my foodie friend would always order the octopus as an appetizer and this restaurant delivered the best one. I’m not going to say why it was the best, but you have to trust me here. I’ve realized that as I write these short paragraphs about food, it all sounds the same. Casa Manolo Leon is fantastic, and if you’re in Sevilla you can’t miss it.

Wine

Vendimia Nocturna & Garum, Bodegas Luis Pérez

Appetizer

Jamón Ibérico & Pulpo a La Parilla

Cordero Asado, Solomillo de Terner & Pochas Con Almejas

Restaurant

Sobrino de Botín

Dinner • 5 People • 173.15 €

El Botin is the world’s oldest restaurant on record and it’s located in Madrid. This is a must if you’re in Madrid. Simply eating at the world’s oldest restaurant is something to live and be able to remember. However, the food is delicious and very reasonably priced. We ordered cochinito and cordero. Cochinito is pork and cordero is lamb, as well as salad, sangria and of course wine. I suggest you make an appointment because it gets busy.

Wine

Mas Irene 2017, Cabernet Franc

Main Course

Cochinillo & Cordero Asado

Dessert

Copa Mascarpone & Tarta de Queso

Conclusion

If you can get a table at el Botín, it's worth the experience. The food is great and the price is unbetable. You're also eating at the world's oldest restaurant. Below is my receipt.

Restaurant

Bodega Los Secretos

Dinner • 5 People • 174.50 €

Bodega de Los Secretos is a great restaurant in Madrid that I recommend. Between this or Paraguas, I’d do Bodega de Los Secretos. The reason I mention El Paraguas here is because they’re in the same class when it comes to restaurants. Bodega de Los Secretos has better food and better prices.

I’m not covering Paraguas here in the photo story because it wasn’t a great experience and it doesn’t earn a spot on my website. It was overpriced, the food portions were small and salty and the service was also borderline insulting.

Restaurant

Los Mellizos Málaga

Dinner • 5 People • 192.40 €

Malaga is by the coast and there are no shortages of great restaurants in the city. We went with Los Mellizos Malaga and it was a solid choice. Relatively cheap, too and they had an extensive wine list. If you’re in Malaga, this is a solid option.

Wine

Martin Códax, Albariño

Appetizer

Gambas al ajillo y calamares

Solid option in Málaga

Málaga being next to the ocean leads to a lot of fresh seafood and incredible restaurants. This is a solid choice but you can't go wrong with restaurants in Malaga.

Restaurant

Restaurante Zal Gorda

Dinner • 5 People • 177.00 €

Restaurante Zal Gorda was the first restaurant in Spain where I had paella. Zal Gorda was a great experience and delicious food. We ordered two paellas, and they were both stunning. The wine wasn’t special here but it was decent. A solid choice that happens to be outside of the historic center. Easiest way to get to the restaurant is to hire a taxi. Uber in Spain is tricky. They’re really only available in Madrid but they’re not very competitive when it comes to price and they often take much longer to arrive.

Appetizers

Ensalada de codorniz higo

Wine

Rayos y Truenos, Verdejo & Quinta Milu, Tempranillo

Main Course

Arroz caldoso y seco

Great option outside of Toledo

Toledo is a small historic town and options can be limited. Searching outside the historic center has many options and Zal Gorda is a great option.

Conclusion

Eating in Spain was my favorite activity of the trip. It’s fair to say that the best food in Europe is in Italy, and after this trip I still feel the same way. However, Spanish food is not too far behind. I’m not going to get into why Spanish food was incredible. Taste is subjective, and I’m really not equipped to review food — I’m not a food critic, nor do I want to be one. Trust me, go to Spain and order the house specialty and you’re going to be impressed.
